The Label Yourself Project:
Geek. Jock. Jerk. Bully. Loser. Nerd. People label each other all the time, and usually the labels aren’t very accurate. With this project students had the chance to label themselves, to create a metaphor that’s a shortcut to understanding the truth about who they actually are.

¿Cómo le gustaría morir?" is Spanish for, "how do you like to die?" This ninja has a Spanish passion rather than a Japanese passion because every ninja is Japanese, and it's become overrated. - B. Costa |

I’m Cinderella that never got a visit from her fairy godmother. In this metaphor “I’m” given many characteristics from “Cinderella” and “that never got a visit from her fairy godmother.” “Cinderella” (a storybook princess.) was a beautiful, young girl that was forced to be a slave by her stepmother and stepsisters, while her father was away. I feel like Cinderella because of the responsibilities my parents and grandparent give me. (Ex: doing the dishes, taking out the trash, caring for the dog and my sister, etc.) But, Cinderella does have her ups in the story, she meets the godmother. When she does meet her fairy godmother, it’s because she couldn’t go to the ball. Instead of her not going, the godmother pops up, gives her a gown, a pair of glass slippers, and a ride to the ball. Making her lose the slipper, having the prince find it, and having a wonderful, married life. When I state, “that never got a visit from her fairy godmother,” I mean, everything is gone. No ball, no glass slippers, no prince, nothing. She’s a slave forever, with no happy “boyfriend” ending. That’s exactly how I feel. I feel as though none of my dreams had ever once come true, and that I’ll be the slave to my parents/ grandparent forever. In conclusion, I’m comparing “Cinderella” (the girl with a once perfect life…), that doesn’t get her hopes and dreams to become a reality. When she never gets a visit from her fairy godmother, I’m making her a slave for good, and a person with absolutely no life. |

“I’m a detective between eight and eleven who’s solving the way to Harvard.” In the phrase “ I’m a detective between eight and eleven” I mean that I like crime shows like NCIS, Numb3rs, CSI, and House and most crime shows are between eight and eleven. I like crime shows because there intriguing, and you also get to see cool and innovative techniques to find criminals. In this phrase Also I compare myself to a detective because of my innovative problem solving. - Mike W. |

I’m just a sketch of the strong statue, held up by three thin legs. “I’m just a sketch of the strong statue, held up by three thin legs” is based of a flimsy easel, or a stand for supporting an artist's canvas. The sketch, a hastily executed drawing, is me. I am a copy of something, or someone, stable and strong. The strong statue, carved from stone, symbolizes my older siblings. My parents drew me, trying to capture what they saw in my siblings. Though easel itself is very stable, perfectly balanced, it is still held up by three flimsy legs and if one of the legs should collapse, it will fall apart. The legs symbolize the three things that I am dependent on: My family, my art, and my future. If I loose one, my entire life will fall apart, and the easel will become nothing but a pile of wood and paper. I am a copy of my older siblings and my life is perfectly balanced, but could tip at any moment. - Catherine V. |

I created the hover car but every time I try taking off the keys are missing. For me it means that my friends and I just don’t follow through with the plans. Literally this metaphor says that I am an awesome genius with this advanced piece of technology that can almost fly but every time I go to use I just can’t find the keys. - Kevin A. |

I am the geek and jock caught in a finite tug of war awaiting balance. There's a smart but weak little geek and a strong and not extremely smart athlete pulling on a rope from opposite sides. And when one of the competitors does well the other is doing badly. This shows that I have two parts of my life, the acedemic part and the sports part and they are constantly battling for the most importance in my life. - Robbie M. |

I am a constantly clicking camera aiming at picture perfection. I am determined, and keep trying at things just like the camera keeps trying to take the picture of perfection. Also, when a camera takes a picture, it's not a real thing, its just a photo of a real thing. This signifies that nobody can really ever be perfect, no matter how many times you try. - Anne R. |

I am a mechanical pencil sketching dreams and realities into sublime novels of magical mystery. I am like a mechanical pencil in this way because I’m persistent. I don’t give up, just as a mechanical pencil never runs out of lead, so you don’t have to stop writing. A mechanical pencil, through rewriting and editing, can turn small, inadequate sketches of your story into great novels. In my life, my dreams and plans are like the sketches that will someday become true. They will be better and realistic, like a novel is to a sketch, or a manuscript. - Renae R. |

I untie from reality wandering familiar virtual worlds and exploring new written ones When I wander my familiar virtual worlds such as games like Runescape and StarCraft I know where everything is and things rarely change. But I rarely reread so it’s always a new book and a new adventure. - Morgan C. |

My mind, one from the outland, is anywhere but where I am. "One from the outland" gives me and my mind the characteristic that I don't fit in with the people around me. My mind being "anywhere but where I am" shows that I really need to concentrate to use my mind because it wanders. - Collin S. |

I'm a snail in a pot of potential and short-lived ambition, burning over the flame of procrastination My shyness and tendency to try not to attract attention, are represented by a snail receding into its shell. And just like i've been becoming less shy, snails outgrow their shells. I am in a pot, containing potential. All of my music teachers say that I could be an excellent violinist, but I don't practice much. Also in the pot, is short-lived ambition. I am always finding different goals and interests to chase, and I can become very dedicated. But the dedication dies after about two weeks. Skating, drawing, parkour, boxing, airsoft, and soccer are some examples. Everything in the pot, all of my potential and ambition, is burned by procrastination. Fire turns everything into an ugly pile of useless crap. - Matt P. |
I'm a kitty stalking the ninjas, highlighting them in neon to show they're not hilarious. In this metaphor, I, the kitty, stalk hired assassins called ninjas and get mad at people who won't stop using them for joke content. Like our good friends hobos, ninjas have become the new popular thing for anyone who wants to be funny to joke about. In reality, ninjas aren't hilarious and saying something like "ninjas PWN!" does not make you the next Adam Sandler. - Emily W. |

I'm the pwnee realizing the futility of applying MMA to annoyances through a TV. Pwnee is a word I made up (pronounced "pony" and meaning I got pwned), but it comes from the word pwn which means to physically own something. I use pwn in this metaphor by meaning pwning some noobs at Call of Duty. "Applying MMA to annoyances" shows that I do mixed martial arts, or MMA, and I wish that I could punch all of those kindergardeners when they say, "Your mom." When I say, "Through a TV" sometimes I wish I could reach through the television and smack those kids, but I realize how futile it is to even try. - Doug B. |
